Monkeypox, an infectious disease caused by the Monkeypox Virus (MPXV), has historically been prevalent in Central and Western Africa. However, recent occurrences have spotlighted its potential global impact. This communication delves into the alarming outbreak of monkeypox in Pakistan, underlining the urgent need for early detection, diagnosis, and containment. Resembling Smallpox clinically but with milder progression, monkeypox spreads through contact with infected animals or their fluids, and human-to-human transmission via respiratory droplets or lesion contact. Given its outbreak potential, rigorous surveillance is paramount.
Pakistan has experienced monkeypox cases, demanding swift attention from healthcare professionals and authorities. Initial symptoms—fever, headache, muscle aches—are succeeded by a distinctive rash evolving through papules, vesicles, pustules, and crusts. Accurate laboratory diagnosis is crucial due to similarities with other poxviruses. Confirmation involves techniques like viral culture and polymerase chain reaction. In light of recent events, proactive vigilance, robust surveillance, and precise diagnostics emerge as crucial strategies against monkeypox's resurgence.
